Zakk Wylde Performed at The Bourbon Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska on August 11, 2016.
Zakk Wylde has been a touring beast this year with Experience Hendrix and Generation Axe. Now he is touring again as a “solo” act for and “acoustic” show. I am a huge fan of Zakk and I will take every opportunity I have to cover him if he is within 100 miles of my office. Why quoted? It is Zakk for sure and the bonus is that his back-up band is Black Label Society. The significant difference for this tour is that the Book of Shadows 2 Tour is a dialed down version BLS. Book of Shadows is not a true acoustic show, but definitely a much more subtle approach to his music than I am accustomed to. It was a nice change from BLS with the addition of a piano and harmonica. The first song, where I spent my time in the pit photographing him was “Sold My Soul” which was a 15-minute exercise of his skills as a guitarist. I could not take enough photos. I left the pit and enjoyed the rest of the show, which highlighted Zakk getting behind the piano for “Road Back Home.”

On tour with Zakk Wylde were Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown, from Nashville, Tennessee, with high energy, dirty rock and roll the way I like it. They crushed their set and the band did not show signs of fatigue for 45 minutes. There was a definite blues influence in their music and they credited several blues musicians as guides to their style.

The first band of the night, supporting Zakk Wylde, from East Troy, Wisconsin was Jared James Nichols. The very first thing I noticed was the way with which Jared played lead guitar…without a pick. He finger played the entire set without wincing and it was a blistering set. I could hear the influences of Ted Nugent, Nazareth, and Mountain in their style and I hoped that at some point in their set they would play “Mississippi Queen”. They did and that left me satisfied with their set.

This show was a great display of musicianship and down-and-dirty rock and roll.
